The Grudge Red-Band Trailer Promises a Blood-Soaked, R-Rated Reboot

Sony Pictures has released a new red-band trailer for The Grudge reboot. This latest movie in the horror franchise sees Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) returning as a producer, with director Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother) at the helm. With this latest trailer, the studio is really showing off the R-rated goods and revealing that they’re not pulling any punches this time around. This is most definitely NSFW. You’ve been warned.

The Grudge reboot trailer starts off with an extended look at a truly horrifying scene that sees a police officer checking in on a woman who, to say the least, seems distressed. As the sequence unfolds, we come to find out why. I personally felt my stomach turn a bit at points and this is certainly not for the faint of heart. We then move to a sequence of various, horrific shots from elsewhere in the movie. There is a great deal of disturbing imagery before the trailer reaches its climax, a shower scene that is full of tension and includes some iconic imagery from the franchise.

It’s important to note that this R-Rated version of The Grudge isn’t a full-on reboot. Instead, this will be taking place at the same time as the events of the 2004 American remake. So the movies exist in the same universe. It’s not exactly a sequel but it doesn’t erase what came before. If anything, it looks like it will be adding quite a bit.

This is the first time in the history of the series that it will be taking the R-rated route. Based on this trailer, it looks like the filmmakers have made the most of it. The cast includes Lin Shaye (Insidious: The Last Key) with Demian Bichir (Alien: Covenant), Andrea Riseborough (Mandy), John Cho (Star Trek Beyond), Betty Gilpin (Glow), Jacki Weaver (The Disaster Artist) and Frankie Faison (The Silence of the Lambs). Nicolas Pesce, in addition to directing, also penned the screenplay, working from a story he cooked up with Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary).

The Grudge centers on a single mother and young detective named Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) who comes upon a suburban home that is cursed by a vengeful spirit. This ghost dooms those who enter the home with a violent death. Now, this cop must run to save herself and her son from demonic entities that dwell in the cursed house in her neighborhood.

The franchise started in 2002 with the Japanese version, Ju-On. The rights were quickly scooped up and the American remake, which went on to become a huge financial success. Takashi Shimizu directed both the original and the remake. The is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Taka Ichise, with Nathan Kahane, Erin Westerman, Brady Fujikawa, Andrew Pfeffer, Roy Lee, Doug Davison, John Powers Middleton and Schuyler Weiss on board as executive producers. The Grudge is set to hit theaters on January 3 from Sony Pictures. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
