Selena Gomez was photographed at JFK airport yesterday in a white Canadian tuxedo, signaling to the world her New York City press trip had come to an end. But before she left the city, Gomez went and got a brand new tattoo from Bang Bang Tattoo that she unveiled to her followers on Instagram last night. She got “Rare” inked on her neck, right below her ear. It’s subtle but very visible. “Did it again @bangbangnyc ? rare,” she wrote.
Rare, of course, is the name of Gomez’s new critically acclaimed album. It’s also the name of the title track. During her iHeartRadio listening party on album release night, Gomez spoke about what “Rare” meant to her: it’s “the song that I wish I could actually say personally to every single person,” she started, via Entertainment Tonight. “I think there’s so much going on… It’s just so much pressure. Everybody thinks that they have to look exactly the same and they have to do these things and the truth is, you don’t. And I felt that way too… It gets in your head and this song is the opposite of that… It’s a song that says, ‘I know that I don’t have it all, but I do know that I deserve something special.’ That song is exactly how I feel. I won’t tolerate being treated any other way.” Getting Rare tattooed is more than just an homage to the album; it’s a testament to that journey creating it and healing, plus Gomez’s thoughts on relationships now and the kind of treatment she deserves.
