Hilary Duff doesn’t get a lot of days off. Between filming the upcoming Lizzie McGuire series for Disney+, raising her two children, and prepping for season 7 of Younger, her schedule is decidedly full. But when she spoke with ELLE.com about another new project, her Muse by Hilary Duff AM/PM collection of eyewear for GlassesUSA.com, she made it clear that all the hard work is worth it. She’s excited for the world to see everything she’s doing, starting with the Lizzie reboot. “I feel like people are waiting for this, and I hope we give them exactly what they want,” she says. “The show feels like a great direction for me, and the first few episodes are quite emotional. Being 30 is emotional.”
ELLE caught up with the actress to discuss revisiting the role that made her famous, her music plans, and whether she’d appear on the Gossip Girl reboot if given the chance.
You have a ton going on right now, but everyone is talking about the upcoming Lizzie McGuire reboot. What’s it been like getting back into a character you originally played in your teens?
It’s really hard to put words to it because there’s a familiarity there, and then there’s also the pressure of who she is now and what has changed and what is still the same. When I was younger, I don’t think I was putting a lot of effort into creating a role that was Lizzie McGuire. I think Lizzie McGuire was who I was at that time. I’m trying to use a little piece of that [now]. Also, I think she has a little more confidence than Lizzie McGuire did when she was 12. She’s made a pretty cool life for herself. It’s been fun.
Everyone knows the family’s coming back. I filmed with them all this week, and it’s a trip, it’s crazy. We want the show to be able to stand alone and not be just a full extension of the one that was almost over 15 years ago. We want it to feel fresh but also serve up some nostalgia.
What’s been the most surprising aspect of revisiting Lizzie?
The excitement, honestly. It sounds so cheesy to say, but it really warms my heart. This character has meant so much to so many people. I’ve known that throughout the years, people constantly coming up to me like, “Oh my God, you were my childhood,” and “You were my best friend.” She really was a key element to kids in their preteen years, and those are very special, scary times.
Now that Adam Lamberg is officially returning as Gordo, what has he been up to? Have he and Lizzie stayed in touch?
I don’t want to give too much away because I really want people to watch the show and be excited by the choices the writers are making. I will say that he’s always been Lizzie’s ride or die and he really comes through for her when she needs him. Like, yet again.
You teased there might even be an Ethan Craft appearance. Any chance of Miranda or anyone else from the original show coming back?
There are a lot of surprises in store. [Laughs] I’m so sorry! I’m sworn by the Mouse to keep my mouth shut.
What was the inspiration for your collection with GlassesUSA.com?
I thought long and hard about my life at the time and what I was relating to. It came down to, I’m a mom and I’m a businesswoman and I’m a fiancée and I’m a daughter and a sister and I have many facets to my life that all link together like links of a chain. That is where the inspiration came from, of sinking the chain [details] into our frames. Being playful, being a busy person, being able to go from day to night and feel like I’m still putting effort into my look; I feel like everybody wants that.
What are your favorite glasses from the line?
One is called Fanny and it’s the little heart-shaped lenses that are a little colored. The other one that’s my absolute favorite is called the Lily. It’s like a cat-eye frame with a sunken chain [along the border] and it’s a really good shape. Anyone that put it on loved it.
Another project you’ll be heading back to soon is Younger, which is getting a seventh season. What can we expect coming up for Kelsey?
I have no idea. Darren Star keeps it very tight-lipped, so I don’t know what this season holds. They impress me at every turn by making each season better than the next. Last season was a very hard season for Kelsey. Everyone was so hard on her and she was dealing with a lot of stressful work pressure. She was totally sabotaged halfway through the season and used like a pawn in a game. [But] it’s really fun to play her. She’s a good person. She’s a little crazy, but she’s really smart. I think people look at her and don’t necessarily think she’s as smart as she is. She’s just trying to figure it all out right now and stay on top.
Any chance we’ll get more music soon?
I always get this question and I feel so bad for [being] like, “No, I’m not doing anything right now.” I feel like I’m going to have a music career forever and who knows how successful it’ll be or what kind of turns it’s going to take. Music is such an important part of my life and has always been a big outlet for me. Having Matt [Koma, Duff’s fiancé] living at my house, I feel like I could always be like, “I want to make a record,” and he’s like, “Oh God, okay, let’s go.” He’s so supportive and talented. I don’t want to say never, but there’s nothing in the works right now.
Is there a song of yours that you reflect on the most or that people want to talk to you about most?
That’s a hard one for me. Obviously the diehards love Metamorphosis and then a lot of people are also like, “Breathe In. Breathe Out. was such a good record, it was so underrated.” It’s so funny because you never know what’s going to happen. I really have amazing fans that pay attention to what I say and have stuck it out with me through a very long career.
I love this song called “Shine.” It wasn’t a single or anything, but I’ve noticed that I’ve been singing it to Luca [Duff’s 7-year-old son] a lot at night when he’s going to bed. It’s such a sweet song and I remember loving to perform that live. It was on my self-titled record.
News recently broke that Gossip Girl is getting a reboot, and you were on several episodes of the original. Would you make a cameo if they asked?
I did hear that’s coming back and I got very excited. I would love to make a cameo.
