Happy New Year’s Eve, everybody! My guess is that if anyone is going to be partying hard tonight, its 20th Century Fox, director James Mangold, as well as the cast and crew of the racing drama FORD V FERARRI. Why, you ask? Well, it might have a little something to do with the fact that FORD V FERARRI has recently left a major milestone in its rear-view, by surpassing $200 million in global ticket sales.
With this achievement unlocked, the biographical film, which stars Christian Bale and Matt Damon, joins a number of other original films that made a splash at the box office in 2019 – including Rian Johnson‘s KNIVES OUT, Jordan Peele‘s US, Quentin Tarantino‘s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, Lorene Scafaria‘s HUSTLERS, and last but certainly not least, Dexter Fletcher‘s ROCKETMAN. What makes these numbers so exciting is the fact that they’re not tied to sequels, spinoffs, or franchise starters. Well, perhaps Johnson could revisit KNIVES OUT sometime down the road, but for the moment, everything is coming up Milhouse for these original ideas in theaters.
In breaking down the earnings for FORD V FERARRI by territory, we find that Mangold’s retelling of the historic tale shared by American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles collected $106.6 million in the U.S. after making a pit stop on the top 10 domestic box office charts for seven weeks straight. Outside of the States, the movie earned $10.1 million in Russia, $9.4 million in France, $9.3 million in Korea, and $7.9 million in the United Kingdom. The film is set for a January 10, 2020 debut in Japan, while its China release date has yet to be determined.
