We’re one step closer to seeing Disney’s live-action Mulan on the big screen. The latest trailer for the film offers a glimpse into how the story of the Chinese folk hero, who disguised herself as a man to spare her father from fighting in a war, will translate from the 1998 animated film.
Starring Liu Yifei, who’s also known as Crystal Liu, the trailer tracks Mulan’s ascent from eager daughter to powerful warrior against an instrumental version of “Reflection.” Yifei, who reportedly beat out 1,000 contenders across five continents for the titular role, will be joined by an extensive ensemble. Her co-stars include Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee, Gongi Li, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Rosalind Chao, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, and Chum Ehelepola.
Niki Caro (Whale Rider, The Zookeeper’s Wife) directed the film, which received backlash in March 2017 when she made comments suggesting the movie wouldn’t be a musical. However, a month later she told The Hollywood Reporter, “We’re still exploring the role that music’s going to play in it, but for sure there will be music.” Disney dropped a first trailer for Mulan back in July, which similarly included instrumental versions of the animated film’s classic songs without featuring outright musical numbers.
