Camila Cabello is on a press tour for Romance, and because so much of the album was inspired by her real-life friendship-turned-romance with Shawn Mendes, Cabello is finally talking candidly about how dramatic things were behind the scenes before the two officially became an item. The timing didn’t work the first time, and it nearly ruined their friendship.
When discussing the inspiration for her songs “Feel It Twice” and “Should’ve Said It,” with Entertainment Tonight Canada, Cabello revealed Mendes confessed his feelings for her once before, at a time she couldn’t reciprocate. (Cabello was dating life coach Matthew Hussey from February 2018 to June 2019. During that time, she worked with Mendes on their duet “Señorita,” which she described as an experience that brought back her feelings for him.)
“I just felt bad that I had—this person had been my friend for a really long time and we were really, really close,” she started. “And when he confessed that he had feelings for me things kind of got awkward because we weren’t together and so I felt like I was hurting him and I felt weird because it felt like we were kind of drifting away as friends. And everybody knows what it’s like when you have someone you’re very close with and I don’t know, they say they have feelings for you and the friendship feels tense suddenly. I felt really bad about hurting him, about hurting somebody that was my friend and was a big part of my life and then they weren’t as much anymore.”
She gave a little more detail about that moment when discussing her song “Should’ve Said It.”
“Someone I knew for a really long time, I had liked him, but he wasn’t ready,” she said. “And so then he liked me, but I was not really there to like him in that way anymore, because I moved on. And I was just kind of angry about it because I was like, ‘now you’re saying that you’re in love with me, you waited so long and now it’s too late’. And so ‘Should’ve Said It’ is about that. I was just angry because I was like ugh, why did you wait so long to tell me? You should’ve said it.”
Ultimately, the two got together in July. “Used To It” was her song of marking that moment and their first date. “I wrote it about someone that I had been friends with for a really really long time,” she said. “And then we started dating and I was just like, oh my god, this is crazy. I can’t believe I get to kiss you in the middle of talking now, that’s so weird. Or get to hold your hand. It’s weird that we’re going to call each other baby at some point. Like that’s really weird because I’ve only called you by your name for years.”
