The Avenger’s quest to obtain all the Infinity Stones in Avengers: End Game culminated in the deaths of a few of our Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, including Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson), who sacrificed her life to secure the Soul Stone. But the MCU isn’t done with Romanoff just yet, as the first peek at Marvel’s Black Widow spin-off has finally arrived.
Taking place between Captain America: Civil War and before her death in Avengers: End Game, the two-minute preview shows Natasha returning to her old stomping grounds in Russia, a place filled with unpleasant memories for the ballerina-turned-spy. As she stares into a mirror, flashbacks of her pre-Avengers life surface. “I’ve lived a lot of lives, but I’m done running from my past,” Romanoff’s voiceover says.
Elsewhere in the preview we see high-speed car chases, a new villain, Romanoff’s new uniform, and…Hopper? Yes, Jim Hopper’s fate in Stranger Things may be uncertain, but David Harbour found a new home in the MCU as Red Guardian—basically, the Russian version of Captain America and Romanoff’s husband in the comic books. The trailer also introduces fans to Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh), whom Romanoff fights in the beginning of the trailer and refers to as “sis,” and Rachel Weisz’s Melina Vostokoff.
While we’re excited to see new faces, sadly, there are no signs of Captain America (and his godly
ass shield), Hawkeye, Hulk, Scarlet Witch, and the rest of the Avengers crew. But with the help of her “family,” Romanoff doesn’t have to settle her “unfinished business” alone. Who is she after this time around? We’ll just have to wait until summer 2020 when Black Widow hits theaters.
